SEX TOY HYGIENE AND MAINTENANCE

YIPPEE! Your sex toy has arrived

Before you use it

When your sex toy first arrives always check it for any faults or imperfections before using it.

Look for any cracks or tears - depending which material is used. If you find a rough edge gently file down with a nail file before using.

Insert the batteries to make sure your toy works.  If unsure how to insert the batteries check the instructions carefully.

Note: If it doesn't work straight away don't assume it is broken because sometimes it is something simple like the way the batteries have been inserted. Some vibrators take 3 batteries so check the instructions.

Sex Toy Hygiene

Always clean your toy before the first use and again after using.

Note: Most sex toys will have the manufacturers recommended cleaning method included but if in doubt contact your sex toy supplier. We have also given some basic instructions below.

Cross infection can occur if you use a sex toy with a partner, or if, as some people do, they use their sex toy on more than one part of their body. It is crucial therefore to always clean your toy after each use.

Soap and water is usually sufficient but it can also depend on what the sex toy is made from.

Note: Do not submerge electric sex toys or the battery part of the vibrator.

Non Battery Sex Toys And Silicone Dildos

Silicone sex toys are the easiest sex toys to clean as they are non porous and usually hypoallergenic so are the best for sharing. You can boil them or wash them in very hot water so the dishwasher is great - make sure your mother in law isn't being a bit too helpful in the kitchen.

Note: DO NOT BOIL any sex toy with batteries or electrical components. Ensure there are no plastic or metal parts before boiling as they can be damaged.

Silicone based sex toys are hypoallergenic so good if you have allergies or sensitive skin and cannot use any form of soap.  Although silicone sex toys are strong you should still be careful not to damage them with teeth or nails. Any tears or cracks could harbour bacteria.

Realistic Sex Toys Made From 'Cyberskin'

Cyberskin is different from other sex toy material and these toys are known as 'realistic sex toys' because they really do feel like skin. This realistic material is often used for vibrators, dildos and quite a few different men's sex toys.

These realistic toys should be washed thoroughly with very warm water - don't use harsh detergents or soap unless the soap is antibacterial. Air dry, and if you want to keep that lovely silky feel you can sprinkle with cornstarch (there is often some 'renewing' powder included when you buy your sex toy) Wrap in soft material and store in a clean dry place.

Note: Do not use talcum or baby powder etc that may cause irritation or other problems.

NEVER use a silicone based lubricant as it  can cause the Cyberskin to deteriorate.

Rubber, Jelly and Latex Sex Toys

These toys are very porous and should only be cleaned with a very mild antibacterial soap and warm water DO NOT BOIL. Always clean and rinse them thoroughly as any soap left behind may damage the material and cause irritation.

Tip: Rubber sex toys need a lot of care and are more difficult to clean so should always be used with a condom.

If using a lubricant ensure when you use it with latex sex toys it is water based as oil based lubes will damage the latex. With latex sex toys it is best to only use hot water for cleaning.

Vinyl Sex Toys

Vinyl sex toys are light and easy to clean and can be washed in hot water and mild hypoallergenic soap.

Plastic, Glass and Acrylic Sex Toys

Toys made from glass, plastic or acrylic can be washed in warm water. To sterilise just use a cotton wool ball soaked in alcohol. Ensure you rinse the sex toy thoroughly before putting it anywhere delicate!

Non battery operated Glass and Acrylic sex toys can be cleaned in very hot water.

A good antibacterial sex toy cleaner is also a good idea and can be used with most sex toys.

Tip: The best way to avoid infection is to use a condom over your sex toy or/and buy different ones for vaginal and anal play or for use by more than one person.

Metal Sex Toys

Not the most popular of toys but they are tough and easy to clean. You can boil and disinfect them. Just make sure you dry them properly. (Use metal toys with care).

Leather

Leather harnesses should be cleaned gently and regularly with a damp cloth.

A Dedicated Sex Toy Cleaner can also be used on most sex toys.

Always read individual cleaner and sex toy instructions!

Infections

Any porous material can easily harbour bacteria and sexually transmitted diseases. If you believe any STD's or other infections may be present it is wise to use a condom with your toy.

Condoms are also good for those women who find themselves allergic to some of the above sex toy materials.

Storing your sex toys

Always remove the batteries.

Clean and dry them thoroughly.

Keep them away from sunlight or extreme temperatures - a bedroom drawer is good.

Keep items separate and wrap them in soft clothing to protect them.
